From
the Preface:
“Zebulon Montgomery Pike (1779-1813) led a life of achievement and service to the United States of America. His heritage was military, as his father, Zebulon Pike, served in the Revolutionary War, and afterward remained as a career soldier. In 1794, at age fifteen, Zebulon Montgomery Pike (or Montgomery as addressed by family and friends) enlisted in the United States Army and served as a cadet in his father’s regiment. His early soldiering was on the western frontier at forts along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
Pike’s greatest historical legacy emanated from his command of the Western Expedition of 1806-1807, by order of General James Wilkinson. The amount and scope of information about New Spain obtained by this military reconnaissance was unequalled at the time. In less than one year from the near military engagement by Spain and the United States on the Sabine River, Pike was able to provide Secretary of War Henry Dearborn with hitherto unknown facts about New Spain”.
